Witnesses in Somalia’s Gedo region say al-Shabab has attacked an African Union military base near the town of El-Adde.
The attack is believed to have been a suicide bomb in the early hours Friday, followed by a firefight with the Kenyan troops stationed at the base.
Details are still emerging. It is not clear whether the AU troops retained control of the base. There is also no word yet on casualties.
Al-Shabab carried out similar attacks on AU facilities last year, in June and in September. Dozens of peacekeeping troops were killed in those attacks.
